TikTok rewards one thing above everything else: watch time on a single video. Not follower count, not production budget, not how long you've been on the app. Every decision a Kenyan creator makes should be judged against a single question — does this make someone watch longer?
The scroll decision happens almost immediately. Open mid-action, mid-sentence or mid-surprise. Avoid intros, logos and long greetings. A useful Kenyan-specific trick is to lead with the place or the price — 'Nairobi rent for a bedsitter in Kilimani' or 'this cost me KES 300' — because specificity makes people stop.
Trending audio still gives you a distribution edge, but the trend has usually peaked by the time it reaches Nairobi. Use trending sounds early in the week, and always burn captions into your video — most people watch on mute first.
Views are the top of the funnel. If a video performs, respond to every comment in the first hour, then post a follow-up that answers the most common question. That loop is what converts a viral video into followers who come back.
A viral video that doesn't teach the algorithm what your account is about will get you views but not followers. Post in the same lane until the platform knows who to show you to.
Organic growth is the foundation, but it has a ceiling. Once you know which video format works, paid or purchased views can push the strongest video past the threshold where TikTok has to test it on a wider audience. That's when a modest boost does the most good — on a video that has already proven it can hold attention.
A realistic, stage-by-stage plan for the 1K to 10K stretch, where most Kenyan accounts stall out.
